Precise measurements, rapid progress and a ground-breaking method for functional performance assessment after ACL reconstruction.
Rehabilitation after an ACL reconstruction is no easy task.
Prof. Jürgen Höher also works with an innovative app, a sensor-supported digital rehabilitation system, in the follow-up treatment of his many ACL patients. These new methods not only change the previously rigid, time-based rehab protocols to rehab management based on the patient’s individual progress, they also provide deep insights into the different healing processes and their influencing parameters through the detailed recording of the patient’s functional data.
Using such data, Prof. Höher has now conducted a study that shows new possibilities for assessing functional performance. These new methods are decisive for the success of rehabilitation and set innovative standards
The study and its significance
This study, published in the journal MDPI-applied science, examined the rehabilitation progress of 143 patients following ACL reconstruction. Using the Single-Leg Vertical Hop Test (SLVHT) and Orthelligent® PRO digital sensor technology, precise data was collected.
The results confirm previous experience and the results of other studies, but also provide detailed insights into the development of motor skills in different patient groups.
Expected results
- Men jump higher than women
- Younger patients jump higher than older patients
- Jump heights with the injured leg improve significantly over the course of rehab (LSI from 3 months post-op 59.6% to 79.6% 6 months post-op)
Surprising results and findings
There was hardly any difference in jump heights with the injured leg between patients who “only” had an isolated cruciate ligament rupture and those who also had meniscus damage as an accompanying injury.
A regression analysis also showed the close correlation and high agreement with subjectively assessed scores, such as the IKDC and KOOS score, which suggests that the SLVHT represents the subjective perception well through the objectively measurable jump height.
Jump height in the single-leg jump test with the injured and non-injured leg after 3 and 6 months postoperatively in the entire ACL-R population. Data are presented as mean (standard deviation); n = 143; statistic: ***, p < 0,001.
The results show that different patients develop at different rates and that the rehabilitation process needs to be tracked and managed individually. Orthelligent® PRO is a tool that is easy and quick to use in the clinical setting, enabling precise data collection and analysis of functional progress in clinical practice. It is a valuable tool to efficiently assess the rehabilitation process.
Why Orthelligent® PRO is revolutionary
Orthelligent® PRO offers fast and precise measurements. The advanced technology provides a simple and repeatable method to objectively assess patients’ functional progress. The digital sensor technology facilitates the assessment of rehabilitation progress, saving time and costs.
The Single-Leg Vertical Hop Test (SLVHT) is a simple, quick and effective test to assess rehabilitation progress after ACL reconstruction. The combination of SLVHT and Orthelligent® PRO provides reliable data that accurately measures patients’ functional performance.
Practical applications and success stories
The practical applications of Orthelligent® PRO are clearly evident in therapy: the rehabilitation process of patients progresses at different speeds in different groups, which is why individual control is particularly important here. These precise measurements enable therapists to track the progress of their patients and adapt the therapy individually. This leads to faster and more effective rehabilitation.
Doctors and therapists report more efficient monitoring of rehabilitation. The objective data from Orthelligent® PRO helps therapists to assess the success of operations and rehabilitation measures and to optimize the rehabilitation process.
It is time to establish Orthelligent® PRO as a standard tool in clinical practice. Clinics and practices are encouraged to use Orthelligent® PRO to increase accuracy and efficiency in rehabilitation. The objective recording of functional progress is thus standardized and widely used.
In addition to Orthelligent® PRO, we also offer Orthelligent® HOME and Orthelligent® VISION to individualize the rehabilitation process and thus control the healing process for each patient individually.
Orthelligent® HOME enables patients to carry out their therapy independently and anywhere. They always have their physio with them. At the same time, Orthelligent® VISION offers therapists a comprehensive view of the entire rehabilitation process.
The study by Prof. Jürgen Höher provides valuable insights into the use of Orthelligent® PRO. Using a special test (SLVHT), he demonstrated that a sensor technology can be used to assess functional performance following ACL reconstruction.
With Orthelligent® PRO, we are shaping the future of ACL rehabilitation more precisely and efficiently.
Our vision is clear: a comprehensive integration of Orthelligent® into therapeutic and rehabilitative processes.
Orthelligent® PRO, together with Orthelligent® HOME and Orthelligent® VISION, ensures that rehabilitation becomes more precise, more effective and more patient-friendly. Let’s redefine and improve the standards of ACL rehabilitation together.
